protein mask

A 4 nm osmium film was used as a substrate for the electrodeposition of cuprous oxide using surface layer proteins from the bacterium Deinococcus radiodurans as a mask.  The periodicity is 18 nm hexagonal, just like the protein, and electron diffraction confirmed that the dark regions were predominantly crystalline cuprous oxide.
